Bali Tales: Bringing 35 Years of Balinese Heritage to Life at Grand Hyatt Bali

  • 19806

For 35 years, Grand Hyatt Bali has stood as a living tribute to Balinese culture—where stories, traditions, and artistry are not only preserved, but brought to life. As the resort celebrates its enduring legacy, “Bali Tales” stands at the heart of this journey: a collection of handcrafted artworks that narrate the soul of Bali through generations.

Inspired by the grandeur of the Balinese water palace Tirta Gangga in Karangasem, Grand Hyatt Bali is designed as a flowing landscape of cascading waterfalls, lagoons, lush gardens, and four traditional ethnic villages spread across 40 acres. Within this setting, art becomes storytelling, and storytelling becomes experience.

As guests journey from the lobby through the resort to their rooms, they are invited to discover “Bali Tales”—a series of intricate wood-burning carvings that depict timeless Balinese narratives. From daily offerings of Canang Sari, scenes of villagers dressed in traditional Balinese attire such as kebaya and kamen, to the dynamic energy of Barong and Kecak dances, each artwork reflects moments deeply rooted in Balinese life. The stories also honor sacred rituals such as Melasti and Ogoh-ogoh, along with revered natural landmarks like Mount Agung and Mount Batur, which hold profound spiritual significance for the Balinese people. Complementing these visual narratives are depictions of beloved local Balinese cuisine, celebrating the island’s culinary heritage as part of everyday culture. Together, the carvings bring Bali’s living traditions, beliefs, and stories vividly to life—allowing guests to feel the island’s spirit far beyond what meets the eye.

Behind every Bali Tales artwork is Mr. Agung Ari, the artisan whose hands have shaped the resort’s cultural heartbeat since 1993. For more than three decades, he has dedicated his craft to creating wood-burned art, lontar leaf carvings, and traditional pieces that define Grand Hyatt Bali’s visual storytelling.

For Mr. Agung Ari, the scent of burning wood is not merely part of the process, it is the fragrance of home, history, and heritage. His unwavering commitment has ensured that Bali’s stories continue to live on, deeply embedded within the resort’s identity.

“It is important for a hotel to preserve local art in this modern era, because culture must live on,” said Mr. Agung Ari. “Art becomes even more meaningful when guests can experience it directly through the space and the stories behind it. This is why many travelers come to Bali, to witness a culture that is alive.”

This philosophy reflects Hyatt’s World of Care, where caring for people means caring for culture, community, and legacy. At Grand Hyatt Bali, the Care for People pillar goes beyond hospitality—empowering colleagues to grow, preserving local artistry, and supporting the surrounding community through long-term partnerships with local artisans and small businesses (UMKM).

As Grand Hyatt Bali marks 35 years, Bali Tales is more than an art collection, it is a living expression of how heritage, craftsmanship, and storytelling continue to define the resort’s past, present, and future.
