Discovering Beaches in Aceh – Indonesia

  • 356

Attracting fewer travellers than many other parts of the country, this province in the northern tip of Indonesia is known for the devastating tsunami of 2004 which killed almost 200,000 people. This island is also the only place in Indonesia to have Shariah law. The fact that this province is not as famous as other parts of Indonesia makes it a great spot to explore more.

It’s not hard to find strips of golden beach and serene islands off the coast. If you are the type of person who loves to put the sand on your toes, Aceh actually has some of the best beaches in the country. Although, some of them lend themselves to surfing and other water sports. The currents around Aceh can be strong, so if you want to swim and sunbathe then the place to do this is Lampuuk Beach which is located outside Banda Aceh. You can enjoy the rolling sand miles away looking out over the gorgeous Indian Ocean, which is perfect for sunbathing. The beach is only around 20 minutes away from the capital.

Those surf addicts must be familiar with Lhoknga. Located 15 kilometres away from the central hub of Banda Aceh, this beach is also known for its water sports. The sea is choppy and has some great surf breaks, so you can easily rent a board and take to the water to ride the waves. As well as surfing, you can also skate across the sea on a kiteboard while harnessing the power of the wind.

If you prefer to dive or just a bit of snorkel, go to Pulau Weh. This island is the main reason why travellers go to Aceh. The beaches here can be compared to those in Bali. Take a short journey by ferry from Banda Aceh to this secluded island, surrounded by turquoise waters and lined with soft golden sands. Some of the best snorkelling and diving to be had in Indonesia can be found offshore from Pulau Weh as the visibility is excellent and you can expect a plethora of underwater life including turtles and rays.

Angela Arbab is a freelance writer, teacher and full time adventurer. Her journey took her to amazing places and she had the pleasure of living in two of her favourite countries and experiencing the abundance of sunshine and smiles. She has worked in vast areas from journalism, content creation and product testing to customer service and teaching, but they all had one thing at their core and that is human connection, communication and writing. Her passion for writing and reading always got her in trouble in times of travel because she still prefers paper and pen and old school books. So imagine the size of that luggage and maybe now it is just too heavy for her to pack up and leave. So here she is in Bali for over five years. To be a full time freelance writer would be the goal while part time community organizing at the local library. In her spare time, memorizing trivia answers and reading are her favourites but so are walking in nature and crawling in a corner while watching the classic ninety minute romcoms.
