Sparkling Triumph: Indonesian Women Redefine Wine

  • 612

Sababay Winery, a pioneering winery founded by mother-daughter duo Mulyati Gozali and Evy Gozali, has once again brought international acclaim to Indonesia’s emerging wine scene. At the prestigious 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards, Sababay’s Ascaro Brut earned a Silver Medal with 94 points, while Fiorosa Rosé Brut received a Bronze Medal, placing Indonesian sparkling wines alongside some of the world’s most respected labels.

Since its inception in 2010, Sababay has earned 67 international awards across its wine products, grape-based spirits, and The House of Sababay as a leading tourist destination—demonstrating the brand’s dedication to quality, innovation, and hospitality.

Working hand in hand with local grape farmers and an experienced team led by French Head of Winemaking and Distilling, Guillaume Quéron, Sababay produces wines and spirits that blend tropical character with global expertise.

“Receiving this recognition among thousands of entries is a proud moment for our entire team and for Indonesian wine,” said Evy Gozali, CEO of Sababay Winery. “It shows that when you combine passion, persistence, and a commitment to local communities, you can create something truly world-class.”

Crafting Sparkling Wines From the Equator

The Decanter World Wine Awards is the largest and most influential wine competition globally. In 2025, more than 18,000 wines from 57 countries were blind-tasted by 250 expert judges, including Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers.

Sababay’s Ascaro Brut—often described as Indonesia’s answer to Champagne—stood out for its elegant freshness, delicate bubbles, and expressive tropical notes. Relaunched in late 2024 after years of refinement under Guillaume Quéron’s guidance, Ascaro earned 94 points, a remarkable score for a sparkling wine crafted in a tropical climate.

Fiorosa Rosé Brut, the result of eight years of research to achieve optimal vine maturity for Bali Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, also captured judges’ attention with its balance of floral and citrus aromas. The wine was awarded 86 points, underscoring Sababay’s position as a pioneer of New Latitude winemaking.

“Our goal is to show that the equator can produce wines with personality and finesse,” said Guillaume Quéron, Head of Winemaking and Distilling. “These awards validate our belief that Indonesia has something unique to offer the world of wine.”

Leading With Heart and Heritage

Sababay was born from a dream to empower farmers and transform the potential of Indonesia’s agriculture. The winery’s name comes from its home by the serene Saba Bay (Teluk Saba) in Gianyar, Bali. Every bottle of Sababay wine is a tribute to Bali’s rich natural bounty, crafted with passion and precision.

From collaborating with local grape farmers to blending European techniques with Indonesian terroir, Sababay’s journey reflects the power of shared purpose—and the impact of women entrepreneurs creating change in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

Beyond winemaking, Sababay produces grape-based spirits and operates The House of Sababay, a welcoming destination open every day for travelers who want to explore Indonesia’s wine culture firsthand. Visitors can enjoy guided tastings, learn about the winemaking process, and discover why Sababay has earned recognition not only for its products but also for its commitment to authentic, immersive experiences.

As Sababay’s sparkling wines make their way onto tables from Bali to London, each bottle carries a message: that ambition has no borders—and no gender.
