Amsterdam’s Hidden Gems From an Insider

  • 551

I’ve been spending a lot of time in Amsterdam since I was young. I used to accompany my father for his work, and now I’m in school there. Over the years, I’ve explored many parts of the city and have discovered my favorite spots that I keep returning to. These are Amsterdam’s hidden gems from an insider’s perspective.

La Nostra Gigi – €€€€, Italian, European

La Nostra Gigi is a cozy, family-owned Italian restaurant that serves homemade dishes inspired by the rich traditions of Italy. It’s located in the lively De Pijp neighborhood of Amsterdam, an area full of trendy bars, restaurants, and a vibrant atmosphere. Despite the many options around, La Nostra Gigi stands out with its warm and inviting vibe, attracting locals who appreciate authentic Italian food.

The menu offers classic Italian dishes, all made with fresh and high-quality ingredients. You can enjoy popular choices like tagliatelle bolognese, fresh ravioli, and wood-fired pizzas with perfectly crisp crusts. But if you’re looking for something special, my personal favorite is the truffle pasta. It’s rich, creamy, and full of flavor, making it a dish you won’t forget. The delicious combination of earthy truffles and smooth pasta makes every bite a real treat.

The décor and interior of La Nostra Gigi in Amsterdam exude a warm, rustic charm, reflecting the essence of a traditional Italian trattoria. Upon entering, you’re greeted by the cozy atmosphere created by wooden tables with a natural finish, complemented by exposed brick walls that add texture and character to the space. Soft, dim lighting casts a warm glow over the restaurant, enhancing the intimate and relaxed vibe, perfect for a quiet dinner or special occasion.

Subtle Italian touches, such as shelves lined with olive oil bottles and vintage Italian posters, give the restaurant a personal and authentic feel. The open kitchen is a standout feature, where guests can watch the chefs prepare dishes, adding to the sense of connection with the food. Simple yet tasteful, the décor is thoughtfully designed to make diners feel as though they’ve stepped into a little corner of Italy, right in the heart of Amsterdam.

Libertine Petit Café – €€-€€€, Café, Mediterranean

Located in the heart of Amsterdam, Libertine Petit Café is a stylish and modern spot for those who love comfort food with a sophisticated twist. This café is perfect for any meal, whether you’re stopping by for a casual brunch, a lunch with friends, or a special dinner.

Libertine’s menu is a celebration of comfort food, but with a twist. While the dishes may sound familiar, they’re prepared with fresh, high-quality ingredients and elevated with creative touches that set them apart. From juicy, succulent burgers to vibrant, colorful salads, every item on the menu is crafted to excite the taste buds. Seasonal mains add variety, ensuring there’s always something new to try. But one dish stands out above the rest—the steak tartare. Perfectly seasoned and expertly prepared, it’s hands-down the best I’ve ever had. This dish alone is worth the visit.

The interior of Libertine is as inviting as the food. With sleek furnishings, a modern design, and a chic color palette of muted tones, the café exudes a sense of understated luxury. Elegant yet cozy, the space is perfect for all kinds of occasions, from casual brunches to more intimate dinners with friends or family. Soft lighting, plush seating, and carefully curated décor elements create a welcoming vibe that makes you want to linger a little longer.

What makes Libertine so special is not just its food or décor but the overall experience. The staff are attentive and friendly, adding to the warm, inviting atmosphere that keeps you coming back. Whether you’re enjoying a quiet meal or gathering with a group, Libertine feels like a place where everyone belongs. Its central location in Amsterdam also makes it an ideal spot to start or end your day in the city. For me, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a refined and satisfying meal, and it’s become a favorite destination whenever I’m looking for something delicious and dependable in Amsterdam.

La Casa Di Angelo – €€€, Italian, Steakhouse, Mediterranean

For a more casual experience but exceptionally delicious Italian food and steak, you should head to La Casa Di Angelo in the heart of Amsterdam. My father once took me here, and now we enjoy eating here together.

The menu at La Casa di Angelo features a range of traditional Italian dishes, all made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. You can enjoy classic favorites like spaghetti carbonara and rich, cheesy pizzas. The truffle pasta is a standout dish, offering a delicious mix of creamy sauce and earthy truffles. Another favorite is the Margherita pizza, with its simple yet perfect combination of tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil. Every dish is prepared with care, making each meal a delightful experience.

Inside, the restaurant has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The décor blends rustic charm with modern touches, creating a cozy space where you can relax and enjoy your meal. Soft lighting and comfortable seating make it a great place for both intimate dinners and casual gatherings with friends and family.

Its central location in Amsterdam also makes it a convenient spot to enjoy a delicious meal while exploring the city.

Linguini Trattoria- €€ – €€€, Italian, European

For a casual and delicious Italian meal in Amsterdam, you should visit Linguini. This cozy restaurant is a favorite among locals who love real Italian food. The first time I went was for my friends’ birthday, and now it’s our regular spot when we want a tasty and relaxed dinner.

The menu at Linguini has many classic Italian dishes, all made with fresh ingredients. You can enjoy favorites like spaghetti with clams or rich lasagna. One of the best dishes is the tuna tartare, which is full of flavor. The pizzas are also amazing.

Inside, Linguini feels warm and comfortable. The décor is simple, with wooden tables and soft lighting that create a relaxed vibe. Whether you’re having a quiet dinner or catching up with friends, it’s a great place for any occasion. The outdoor seating is in a quiet street, and it’s perfect for enjoying a glass of wine and a meal in the fresh air. The view of the peaceful neighborhood adds to the relaxing atmosphere.

Qlique Bar Bistro- €€ – €€€, Italian, French

Qlique Bar Bistro in Amsterdam is a trendy and vibrant spot, perfect for those looking to enjoy good food and drinks in a lively atmosphere. Known for its modern bistro-style dishes and creative cocktails, Qlique has quickly become a favorite hangout for me and my friends if we fancy a cocktail as well.

At Qlique, the menu is packed with European-inspired dishes that come with a modern twist, and it’s easily one of my favorite places to eat. They’ve got everything from flavorful small plates to filling mains, so there’s something for everyone. I absolutely love their juicy burgers, and the crispy calamari is always a go-to for sharing. When I’m in the mood for something lighter, their fresh salads hit the spot. But the real star for me? The truffle fries. They’re a must-try! I can never visit without ordering them.

The cocktails at Qlique Bar Bistro are just as impressive as the food. Each cocktail is crafted with care, blending classic flavors with creative twists. Whether you’re into refreshing drinks or something a bit stronger, they’ve got it all. I’m a big fan of their signature cocktails, like their twist on the espresso martini, which is the perfect mix of smooth and bold. For something more refreshing, their citrusy gin cocktails are always a great choice.

Inside, Qlique has a sleek, contemporary design with cozy seating, dim lighting, and a stylish bar area. It’s the kind of place that feels comfortable for both casual dinners and fun nights out. The friendly staff adds to the welcoming vibe, always making sure you have everything you need.
